Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed

1/4 cup cold water

1 lb ground beef

1 small onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp fresh ginger, grated

1/2 tsp allspice

1 tsp paprika

1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (adjust for spice preference)

2 green onions, chopped

1/4 cup breadcrumbs

Salt and pepper to taste

1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and turmeric powder.

Add the chilled, cubed butter and mix with your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Gradually add the cold water, stirring until the dough comes together. Form into a ball, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

In a skillet, heat some oil over medium heat and sauté the chopped onions for 2 minutes until translucent.

Add garlic and ginger, cooking for another minute until fragrant.

Stir in the ground beef, allspice, paprika, cayenne, and cook until the beef is browned.

Season with salt and pepper to taste, then stir in the green onions and breadcrumbs. Remove from heat and let the filling cool.

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. Cut into circles (approximately 5-6 inches in diameter).

Place a spoonful of the beef filling onto one half of each circle, leaving the edges clear.

Fold the other half over the filling to create a pocket and press the edges to seal. Crimp with a fork for an extra decorative touch.

Beat the egg and brush the tops of each patty with egg wash to give a golden finish.

Place the patties on a lined baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.

Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your homemade Jamaican beef patties!
